SA’S TOP CHEFS ENCOUNTERED A NEW WORLD OF EXTRAORDINARY FLAVOURS

In August 2018, Robertsons launched their brand new spice formulations which are now GMO-free, non-irradiated and contain no MSG added. It’s a new world of extraordinary flavour, and Robertsons couldn’t wait to share it with some of South Africa’s top Chefs.

AN UNEXPECTED DAY ON A SPICE ESTATE

Launching a new, all-natural spice range is a big deal. A huge, exciting, amazing deal actually. Which is why Robertsons created a surprise pop-up Spice Estate in the gorgeous surrounds of the Paarl winelands. They bundled South Africa’s top Chefs into a bus, and whisked them away on a journey on unexpected encounters and flavours.

And what a journey it turned out to be! Dion Ventagass, Executive Sous Chef at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, Kevin Joseph, Executive Chef of the Oyster Box Hotel, Ash Heeger, Owner and Chef at the Riverine Rabbit, James Khoza, Executive Chef at the Sandton Sun Hotel and President of the South African Chefs’ Association, Xanthos Giannakopoulos, Food Consultant, Ziyaad Brown, Executive Sous Chef at the Silo, Malika van Reenen, Executive Chef at Signal Restaurant at the Cape Grace, Jocelyn Myers-Adams, Executive Chef of the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town, and Moyzill Baatjies, Head Pastry Chef at Arabella in Hermanus were delighted at every turn.

They tasted the new spice formulations, were challenged to create a beautiful plate of food showcasing the spices, and spent time with a sommelier who paired a variety of Avondale wines with the spices.

"For me, today was a journey back to the origin of ingredients, a celebration of naturalness," said Chef James Khoza. “With this new launch, Robertsons has aligned itself to what Chefs want – ingredients that are true to nature,” he said.

"It’s been a wonderful experience,” said Xanthos Giannakopoulos. “I’m really excited about these new spice formulations – and that Robertsons is finding a more natural way to harness the flavours of their spices," he said.
